WARNING: Alabama Dog Nearly Dies After Consuming Item From Trash Can
We are big pet lovers around these parts.
No offense to the cat-lovers, but we are especially fond of dogs.
It is simply man's BEST friend.
Your wife may abandon you. Your friends may abandon you.
Even family can leave you high and dry.
That little ball of fur (or big ball in some cases) will always be there for you.
This is the story of a family in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and their pooch named Dallas.
Dallas is a very sweet, cute little dog.
The family has asked me to withhold their last name.
So, I will call them Fred, Wilma, Pebbles, and Barney.
In this case, Pebbles and Barney are the two children in the family.
Fred works a very tough job in the outdoors from 6 in the morning until 7 or 8 at night five days a week.
When the heat index in Alabama is 106 degrees, it can't be fun to work outside.
This is serious manual labor/construction-type stuff that Fred does every single day.
After a long day at work, Fred will occasionally relax with a smoke.
Fred typically only smokes on the weekend.
What is he smoking?
Something called weed wax.
Weed wax is a highly concentrated form of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
It is very potent.
Well, Fred threw away a wax container on a Saturday afternoon.
Dallas will dig anything out of the trash. You can't leave anything except for paper products in the trash can.
Of course, she got into the wax container and licked quite a bit of the residue.
All hell broke loose after that incident.
Wilma noticed that something was wrong with Dallas.
Dallas was very, very lethargic and her eyes were glazed over.
I know, it kind of sounds like anyone who is stoned.
This was not just a harmless, funny thing.
It was getting very serious, and Wilma knew it was an issue.
Wilma's sister came over to the house and after observing the dog became very upset about her condition.
It was getting worse. The dog wasn't breathing normally.
So, Wilma and her sister found an emergency vet in the Tuscaloosa area and they rushed Dallas to the animal hospital.
The staff on duty told them they were dealing with a very serious situation.
They were honest with the emergency staff.
Wilma admitted that their beloved chihuahua had gotten into some concentrated "wax" residue in the trash can.
The staff informed them that their dog was having heart rhythm issues as well as breathing problems.
They told them that Dallas could possibly die that night.
Both Wilma and her sister started crying right there in the lobby of the animal hospital.
Thank God, after some medication and other emergency treatment, Dallas began to come back to life.
For a while after coming back to a normal health situation, she was VERY aggressive.
That is nothing like her normal behavior. She is typically very sweet and passive.
Maybe I'd be aggressive and irritated if you dosed me with a ton of "wax" and I had never been exposed to that substance before.
This happens to more dogs/pets than I could ever imagine.
The veterinarian explained that this was quite common in West Alabama.
Some people do it thinking it will be funny to watch their pet get stoned.
However, it can kill your pet.
Here's some info on what to do if your dog gets into cannabis.
Let's be careful and keep our doggies (and other pets) safe.
