When severe weather strikes or temperatures plunge across West Alabama, one local organization works behind the scenes to ensure vulnerable residents are not left without help. The Compassion Coalition of Tuscaloosa County, a volunteer-driven nonprofit organization, brings together churches, community leaders, emergency agencies, and local volunteers to provide critical assistance during times of crisis.

Built on a multi-faith foundation, the coalition partners closely with the Tuscaloosa County Emergency Management Agency and other community organizations, including many non-profits, to respond to emergencies throughout the county. Their mission centers on helping individuals and families facing hardship, particularly during dangerous weather events and natural disasters, who often "fall through the cracks" when needing assistance.

One of Compassion Coalition's most needed efforts over the past couple of years has been operating temporary warming stations during periods of extreme cold or cooling stations when temperatures and heat indices rise to dangerous levels.

These emergency shelters offer a safe place for people who lack reliable heat, air conditioning, or stable housing when freezing or blistering temperatures move into the area. Volunteers help provide warmth, food, and a secure environment for those seeking refuge from harsh winter or dangerous summer conditions.

Additionally, the organization supports disaster preparedness and recovery efforts. By working alongside local agencies and public safety officials, the Compassion Coalition helps connect residents with resources and information during emergencies. Their role often includes supporting relief efforts, assisting with community outreach, and helping residents recover after severe weather impacts the area. Compassion Coalition also works directly with both VOAD (Volunteers Organizations Active in Disaster) and the LTRC (Long Term Recovery Committee) of Tuscaloosa.

As weather emergencies and unexpected hardships continue to affect families across West Alabama, organizations like the Compassion Coalition remain an important source of hope, relief, and practical support for the community. As such, community support plays a major role in keeping these services available. Donations of various types (including toiletries, blankets, warm hats and gloves, snacks, water, etc.) are frequently needed to supply shelters and emergency response efforts. However, the biggest current need is funding for a "storage building" to house large disaster-response materials that are donated but must be stored until needed.

When physical donations are requested, they can be dropped off at the Tuscaloosa EMA Office in Northport. For those wishing to make a monetary donation to help Compassion Coalition of Tuscaloosa, donations can be mailed to Compassion Coalition, P.O. BOX 1507, Tuscaloosa, AL. 35403-1507
