Alabama Residents Spend More For Health Insurance

There's no other way to say it. Alabama residents spend more of their income on health insurance than residents of many other states. Why are we paying so much more for health insurance?

According to WalletHub, Alabama residents spend the 9th highest percentage of their income on health insurance. This does not surprise me in the least. I knew we were being taken advantage of for some reason. When you look at health insurance spending in Alabama, the average health insurance premium is $632. That accounts for nearly 12% of average monthly household income.

As you can see above, Mississippi is slightly higher than Alabama. West Virginia is spending the most at nearly 21% of average household income. Some other states that surprised me are also spending more than Alabama. States like Wyoming and Vermont.

I know some of the "experts" are gonna claim that "inflation" is a big reason why we spend such a big chunk of our income on health insurance. I don't buy it. We have had high premiums for years in Alabama. No insurance is the most dangerous way to live. Medical debt is one of the top reasons for filing for bankruptcy in the USA. I'm certain that number is really high in Alabama.

It's time for some of the well-known Alabama politicians to make this a key issue going forward.
