
New Alabama Laws Causing Controversy in 2025
The Alabama Legislature's regular session in 2025 began on February 4, 2025, and adjourned on May 15, 2025. As of May 15th, several new laws have been passed that are causing quite a stir across the state.
Legislative Session
What is a legislative session, you might ask? Simply put, this is a time period over several months where elected officials who make up the state legislature meet to consider and pass laws.

Alabama's 2025 Session
According to the Alabama State Bar, a total of 621 bills were introduced in the House and 347 in the Senate in Alabama for the 2025 session.
Although there were many laws passed recently in Alabama, there are a few that have been discussed highly among residents and members of the community.
Here are a few of Alabama's most controversial new laws.
House Bill 166
Aimed at reducing distractions and improving academic performance, the FOCUS Act has been signed into law. This officially bans students from using smartphones and wireless devices during the school day in public schools.
House Bill 445
According to this law, establishments that sell consumable hemp products to liquor stores and other locations where minors aren't allowed will now be restricted from doing so. The bill would also repeal the law allowing psychoactive cannabinoid sales to adults.
House Bill 202
Known as the "Back The Blue" Bill. HB 202's focus is to establish immunity for law enforcement officers from civil liability. The law also gives immunity to law enforcement officers from criminal prosecution.
