As we approach the 250th birthday of our nation, everyone seems to be going "250" crazy these days.

It should be a big thing because you don't turn 250 years old very often. In fact, I think you could argue that it only happens one time. The "time capsule" is a great idea: the concept is that each state contributes items that represent what it's all about. It is a great idea, and the other part of this project is imagining what people will think when they open it on our 500th birthday.

WHAT KIND OF ITEMS ARE STATES PUTTING IN THE CAPSULE?

This is the part I am taking issue with on behalf of all Alabamians. As we examine the list, most states put multiple items into the time capsule. Let's have a look at a few states.

Arizona put these items in the capsule:

Arizona

Arizona put a multitude of items in the capsule. Alabama is represented by ONE item.
Even the state of Arkansas put something cool in the capsule.
Arizona put a letter from the governor (many states did the same) and a diamond. A diamond makes perfect sense with many folks traveling each year to check out the Crater of Diamonds State Park. Everyone wants to get one of those huge diamonds, and that makes you think of Arkansas.
Georgia put a few things in, including something from the famous "Masters Golf Championship". The Masters are held each year in Augusta, Georgia, and that makes total sense.

SO, WHAT DID ALABAMA PUT IN THE TIME CAPSULE?

OK, are you ready for this?

To represent the state of Alabama, a series of POEMS was placed into the time capsule. POEMS!?!?! Yes, the first thing everyone thinks of when Alabama is mentioned is poetry. WHAT? Who was in charge of this project for Alabama? We can do so much better than this.

You can take a look for yourself at what states put in the capsule on the "America 250" page.

A series of poems for Alabama. Are these poems even about Alabama? What would you suggest putting in a time capsule to represent Alabama?
