The current drought in our state and region has caused big problems, and that will only get worse if we don't get some rain in the near future.

The USDA has announced that thirty Alabama counties have been placed on a list of primary natural disaster areas.

The announcement came from Alabama Commissioner of Agriculture Rick Pate earlier today.

The current conditions, combined with dry air across the state, have increased the risk of wildfires and prompted red flag warnings, according to WBRC-TV.

This is all putting extra stress on our Alabama farmers and ranchers due to the impact on their crops.

The counties that are included on the list are:

Wilcox, Washington, Tallapoosa, Sumter, Russell, Pike, Montgomery, Monroe, Marengo, Macon, Lowndes, Lee, Houston, Henry, Hale, Greene, Geneva, Escambia, Elmore, Dale, Crenshaw, Covington, Conecuh, Coffee, Clarke, Choctaw, Chambers, Butler, Bullock, and Barbour.

Twelve other counties have been listed as a "contiguous disaster area."

They include Tuscaloosa, Autauga, Baldwin, Bibb, Chilton, Clay, Coosa, Dallas, Mobile, Perry, Pickens, and Randolph counties.

Farmers in these areas may qualify for emergency loan assistance.
