C'mon man! I don't like reporting this story. I've reported other stories in the past that Alabama didn't do so well in, but nothing like this. We're talking about our kids here! We can do much better than this.
August is Child Support Awareness Month in America, and 1 out of 7 children is living in poverty. A new report just released ranks the states with the most underprivileged children in 2026. The report was done by the research team at WalletHub. To highlight where children face the greatest hardships, WalletHub compared all 50 states as well as D.C. across more than 20 different indicators of child poverty or neediness.
The research looked at things like the share of children living in households below the poverty line, child food insecurity, and the share of children who have experienced some level of abuse. While Alabama did not look great in this study, the state with the most underprivileged kids was our neighbor, Mississippi. The state of Mississippi had the largest share of children with parents whose income is below the poverty line. Mississippi also has the highest share of low-income households with no working adult in the household.
