Winter-related alerts issued by the National Weather Service stretch from portions of Texas all the way east to South and North Carolina. That's a very large path that will feel the impact of the latest winter storm.

Alabama is also affected by the winter storm. Here is what the Yellowhammer State faces today, Tuesday, January 21.

Winter Storm Timing for West Alabama

The overall timing for the duration of the winter storm is from 7 a.m. this morning through 1 a.m. Wednesday.

More Insight into the Possible Impacts

"Due to very cold ground and infrastructure temperatures, it won't take much in the way of snow accumulations to cause significant travel impacts," said the National Weather Service in Birmingham. "Therefore, a majority of the Winter Weather Advisory area has been issued based on potential impacts, rather than forecast snowfall amounts."

"For now, the winter weather advisory does not include Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Gadsden, or points north. A few snowflakes are certainly possible, but for now the main travel impact is expected to be to the south," said Spann.

Snow Amounts

Winter Storm Warning Area: Snow amounts up to 3 inches.

Winter Weather Advisory Area: Amounts up to 0.5-1 inch.

Spann said there is "a good chance this system will bring the most snow Mobile has experienced since February 1973. Where banding occurs a few spots could see over 4 inches somewhere between Dothan and Mobile; accumulating snow is likely for places like Gulf Shores, Pensacola, and Fort Walton Beach. Panama City Beach could see some snow."

What the Townsquare Media Weather Center is Watching

As James Spann preaches, winter storms in the south can always bring a surprise. We are closely watching what impacts could come in the 1-20 corridor as the winter storm progresses.
