Recognition doesn't always come to those in the trenches.

Earlier today, the City of Tuscaloosa shone a spotlight on its hard-working employees.

The Employee Excellence Awards were held at the Tuscaloosa River Market, with Mayor Walt Maddox delivering words of encouragement.

Maddox said, "Each year, it is my honor to celebrate our employees who go above and beyond every single day to make Tuscaloosa what it is."

The program was created to recognize the City of Tuscaloosa employees who show exemplary individual achievement, contribution, and performance in their jobs.

City employees were honored in multiple categories, including 25, 30, and 35 years of service, as well as "Cheers for Peers" and Overall Excellence Awards, which included Mayor's Excellence Awards and Emerging Leaders, rounding out the accolades.

The City tells us that this year, over 80 employees were recognized during the event.
