If you’re an Alabama Crimson Tide fan, you know some things don’t sit right.

Losing a football game is one of them. Hearing somebody say that Tennessee is better than Alabama is another. But there’s something else that can make a Tide fan cringe before the opening kickoff even begins.

That color.

You know the one I’m talking about.

UGLY TENNESSEE ORANGE!

That bright, unmistakable shade of orange worn by the Tennessee Volunteers, and for many Alabama fans, it’s one of the most offensive sights in all of college football.

The Alabama-Tennessee rivalry is one of the most storied matchups in college football.

Known traditionally as the Third Saturday in October, this annual showdown has been bringing excitement, tension, and bragging rights to Alabama and Tennessee for generations. It is special for sure.

The two programs first met in 1901, and their rivalry has grown into one of the defining traditions of Southeastern Conference football. The teams have played almost every year since 1928, with the exception of 1943 during World War II.

For we Bama fans, this isn’t just another game on the schedule.

It’s about pride. It’s about tradition. It’s about spending an entire year reminding your friends who won the last time we played Tennessee.

And, naturally, it’s about making fun of that ugly orange.

Ask an Alabama fan what makes Tennessee different from other opponents, and you might get an earful.

Ask that same fan about Tennessee orange, and you might want to sit down for a while.

Now, let’s be fair for a moment.

Tennessee fans love their orange. They wear it proudly, decorate their homes with it, and fill Neyland Stadium with it on game day.

To them, it’s a symbol of their university and their football tradition.

But to an Alabama fan? Like you and me. Well, that’s another story entirely.

Alabama has its crimson and white. There’s something classic about those colors. They represent decades of football tradition, legendary players, championship seasons, and the pride of the University of Alabama.

Then there’s Tennessee orange.

It’s bright. It’s bold. It’s impossible to miss. And according to plenty of Crimson Tide faithful, it’s just plain ugly.

Of course, there’s no official scientific measurement for how ugly a college football uniform can be. This is a matter of personal taste,

Let’s just say that if you put a room full of Alabama fans in front of a wall painted Tennessee orange, you probably wouldn’t hear many compliments.

But here’s the thing: that color is part of what makes this rivalry so much fun. And those victory cigars. That’s a whole other blog

Without the orange, there would be one less thing for Alabama fans to complain about. And where would the fun be in that?

College football is about much more than what happens between the sidelines.

It’s about family traditions, lifelong friendships, tailgating, favorite memories, and the people who gather together every Saturday to cheer for their team.

For Alabama fans, crimson and white are more than uniform colors. They’re part of an identity that connects generations of supporters.

Grandparents pass their love of the Tide down to their children. Parents take their kids to games. Friends gather around televisions, grill their favorite foods, and spend hours discussing every play.

And when Tennessee is the opponent, the conversation usually gets a little louder.

Suddenly, that orange shirt somebody wore to the grocery store becomes a conversation starter.

A Tennessee hat at a local restaurant might earn a good-natured comment from an Alabama fan.

And if somebody shows up wearing Tennessee orange on game day in Tuscaloosa, they’d better be prepared for a little friendly ribbing. That’s part of the culture.

It’s not necessarily about disliking the people who support Tennessee. Plenty of Alabama fans have friends and family members who cheer for the Volunteers.

It’s about the rivalry, the competition, and the joy of giving your friends a hard time when their team loses.

At least, that’s how it works when everybody can laugh about it afterward!

After Alabama wins, of course.

The Alabama-Tennessee series has produced some memorable games and dramatic swings in momentum.

Alabama has enjoyed some impressive winning streaks, including an 11-game run from 1971 through 1981. Tennessee also had its moment, winning seven consecutive games against the Tide from 1995 through 2001. Alabama eventually ended that streak in 2002.

Those stretches remind us that rivalries aren’t built on one team’s success alone.

They’re built on years of competition, unexpected outcomes, heartbreaking defeats, and victories that fans remember for decades.

If you’re an Alabama fan, you probably remember some of the big victories over Tennessee with a smile.

If you’re a Tennessee fan, you probably have a few memories of your own that you’d love to remind us about.

But regardless of which team wins, one thing remains certain: when those orange jerseys appear across the field, Alabama fans know exactly who they’re playing.

This year’s showdown arrives Saturday, October 17, in Knoxville, Tennessee. The Crimson Tide will visit Neyland Stadium for another edition of the Third Saturday in October, with Alabama entering the matchup ranked No. 6 and Tennessee ranked No. 14. The game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Central and will air on ABC. And on 953 The Bear.

Crimson is beautiful. White is classic. And Tennessee orange? Well, bless its heart.

Roll Tide!
