Snow Expected to Change to Wintry Mix Across Alabama

Many Alabamians woke up to the southern version of a winter wonderland.

The National Weather Service in Birmingham said, “Snow this morning is expected to change over to a wintry mix, followed by a potential for freezing rain before temperatures rise above freezing this afternoon, with all rain expected by that time.”

As the winter storm continues to impact Alabama, it is causing some major impacts on roadways through midday.

Bibb, Pickens, and Tuscaloosa

Winter Storm Warning is from now through Friday, January 10, at 3 p.m.

In the Winter Storm Warning counties, snow and sleet accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are expected.

These counties are in a “Significant Risk Area,” which means they have dangerous or impossible driving conditions. It is recommended that travelers avoid these areas if possible.

Please note that the southern portion of Pickens and Tuscaloosa is under the “Elevated Risk Area.” It is recommended that travelers use extra caution while driving.

Fayette, Lamar, and Walker

Winter Storm Warning is from now through Saturday, January 11 at 6 a.m.

In the Winter Storm Warning counties, snow and sleet accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are expected.

These counties are in a “Significant Risk Area,” which means they have dangerous or impossible driving conditions. It is recommended that travelers avoid these areas if possible.

Greene, Hale, Perry, and Sumter

Winter Weather Advisory is from now through Friday, January 10, at 3 p.m.

In the Winter Storm Advisory counties, snow and sleet accumulations of 0.5 to 2 inches are expected.

These counties are divided into an “Elevated Risk Area” and a “Limited Risk Area.” In both areas, it is recommended that travelers exercise extra caution while driving in elevated areas while limited is using caution while driving.

Friday Evening into Saturday Morning Concerns

“Any residual water or moisture on roads may refreeze and lead to black ice formation tonight into Saturday morning,” said the National Weather Service in Birmingham.
