Former Alabama strength and conditioning coach and University of Georgia special teams coordinator Scott Cochran has reportedly stepped away from the Bulldog program. Cochran left Alabama for Georgia to take an on-field coaching role in the spring of 2020.

“Coach Cochran is currently dealing with health issues and is taking time to prioritize his mental health and well-being,” Smart said in a statement released by UGA. “We fully support him as he takes this time to focus on his well-being.”

Cochran spent 13 years as strength and conditioning coach for the Crimson Tide and is credited as the architect of the off season "Fourth Quarter" conditioning program. Seth Emerson of The Athletic reports that fellow former Saban-assistant, Will Muschamp, will take over Cochran's on-field role.

It is unclear how long Cochran will be away from the football program at this time as the university gave no timetable for his return.

Georgia kicking unit last year boasted the SEC Special Teams Player of the Year in punter Jake Camarda averaging 46.6 yards per punt. Cochran's units also led the SEC in kickoff return average, kickoff coverage and total blocked kicks.

Nick Saban replaced Cochran last season with Dr. Matt Rhea and David Ballou out of Indiana University. The pair stepped in and helped Alabama manage offseason training during a pandemic and helped cut Alabama's injuries by 50% according to Nick Saban at SEC Media Days 2021.
