Many residents in Northeast Alabama are reporting on social media the appearance of the insect known as the Asian Woolly Hackberry Aphid.

The scary thing about this bug or insect is that it can fill the air with such a vast presence that it resembles snow or a plant blowing in the wind.

Many individuals are unaware that these creatures exist until they land on them or capture one of them.

I hate to use a term like this, but I am only reporting what people in North Alabama are saying on social media. Many are using the word “plague” as in a biblical plague.

These pests are invasive and tend to damage trees and plants; however, they primarily land on trees and suck the sap from them. They are sucking little creatures.

They can destroy plants and trees, which is one of the main reasons experts are concerned about these pests.

The other news is positive, specifically regarding humans and pets. These bugs do not typically cause any harm to humans or animals, and they don’t bite.

They suck on the sap of trees.

Many are asking what can be done, and one key point to note is that certain insects are predators and will target these aphids.

For example, ladybugs are a beneficial insect to have around during times like this.

It’s just disturbing to see so many of them in the air and invading our personal space, only to find out that these things are actually alive and are actually insects.

Now that they have arrived in North Alabama, they are expected to continue spreading across the state.
