Do You Have Spiders in Your House?

As I stepped sleepily into the bathroom this morning to splash cold water on my face, a black spec on the ceiling caught my eye. It only took about a half second to realize what it was.  As you can see in the pic, it was a large spider of some sort.  A cold chill ran over me. I slowly exited the bathroom and grabbed the first thing a saw, a flip-flop, and returned to the bathroom to end the spiders life. It was pretty uneventful. I snapped a picture before I smashed it and flicked it into the toilet and flushed it.

This isn't the first spider I have ever seen in my house but the first mammoth spider I have seen in my bathroom that could have pounced on me and made me hurt myself.  I have two questions. How did it get in the bathroom? and What kind of spider is it?
