Alabama Faces Two Distinct Storm Systems: Possible Wintry Weather
A powerful winter storm is set to bring heavy snow and ice from the Plains to the Midwest and into the mid-Atlantic this weekend. It will continue into Monday, potentially disrupting travel and daily life across the affected regions.
Although this winter activity is occurring north of Alabama, the Yellowhammer State won't escape its effects entirely.
Closer to home, Alabamians can expect to "deal with two distinct storm systems," said James Spann, ABC 33/40, and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist.
The Weather Channel said, "Rounds of arctic cold air will plunge through the eastern U.S. over the next week or so." Also, while "record cold isn't forecast for most, it will be uncomfortable, particularly in the Deep South."
Round One – Sunday into Monday
The Storm Prediction Center has placed counties under a "marginal risk" for Sunday.
"The air should be relatively cool and stable, and the overall severe weather threat is low," said Spann. "The more meaningful threat is west of the state over parts of MS/LA/AR where there is some instability involved."
Ahead of the storm system, you can expect gradient winds of up to 40 mph.
Now, after the storms pass on Monday, residents should brace for much colder temperatures and windy conditions. Also, remember the wind chill factor.
Spann said that "snow flurries are likely over the northern third of Alabama.

Round Two – Friday
Once round one is behind us, and we get closer to Friday, the outlook for round two will be much clearer. Confidence is growing that portions of Alabama could experience wintry precipitation on Friday into Friday night.
"Global models are now showing strong signals of a surface low forming near the Gulf Coast on Friday," said Spann. "This will spread rain into South Alabama and set the stage for wintry precipitation over the northern third of the state."
This is a developing weather situation, and many factors contribute to winter weather. The Townsquare Media Weather Center will continue to monitor the potential for both rounds of weather concerns.
