A man and woman in Havana, Alabama were arrested in Hale County Thursday and charged with the abuse and rape of a child.

In a press release Friday, the Hale County Sheriff's Office said Matthew and Kersey Hinton were taken into custody after an extensive investigation conducted by the sheriff's office, the Alabama Department of Human Resources and the 4th Judicial Circuit Task Force.

Matthew Hinton, 35, was charged with aggravated child abuse and child abuse. He was jailed in Hale County, where his bond was set at $75,000.

Mrs. Kersey Hinton, 39, was charged with first-degree rape, sexual abuse of a child and child abuse. Her bond was set at $180,000.

Court documents say the Hintons, on more than one occasion, withheld food from a child under six years old, refused to allow him to use the bathroom and made him stand in once place for prolonged periods. Kersey Hinton is also accused of watching pornography while lying next to the child and attempting to engage him in sexual acts.

Both were taken into custody without issue, according to the sheriff's office.

Hale County Sheriff Kenneth Ellis thanked all the law enforcement officials who made the investigation and arrest possible.
