Tomorrow, on a cold Tuscaloosa morning, I will run to Krispy Kreme, attempt to eat a dozen doughnuts and run/walk/lumber back to the finish line.

It got started innocently enough. I signed up because I love a good race and I was a “little brother” when I was younger so I have an instilled loved for Big Brothers Big Sisters, the organization this race is benefitting. All the while, knowing full well that there is no way I could even imagine eating a dozen doughnuts and running.

I then went recruiting. My co-worker Greg Thomas jumped on board and loudly boasted that he’s going to compete as a register as a “Challenger”! A big flushing sound could be heard through the building as my hopes of competing in the “Casual” category went down the drain.

Let me break it down for you, there will be 2 categories:
1) Challenger - finishing 12 doughnuts is required
2) Casual - eat as many doughnuts as you want and then returning to the start/finish line

I cannot let a co-worker get the best of me. Can I? If he eats all 12 and I don’t, everyone in the office will know. I’ll hear the stories for years of how he ate 12 doughnuts then each time the story teller will finish with a quick, quiet, “… and Monk didn’t.”

So, wish me luck as I brave the cold and take on the Krispy Kreme Challenge tomorrow morning at 8:30! A full update on my experience will follow sometime Saturday as soon as I finish picking up the broken pieces of my will power.
