Women from across West Alabama gathered for an afternoon of inspiration, connection, and celebration during the Women’s Leadership Alliance Annual Celebration, hosted by the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama earlier this month at Hotel Capstone.

Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa’s very own Edie Hand served as the keynote speaker, bringing a wealth of knowledge, resilience stories, and a message of empowerment to the audience. The central theme of her address was centered on using your experiences to empower others.

Hand, whom I lovingly call the G.O.A.T. (the Greatest of All Time), something that always makes her laugh when I say it, truly lives up to the title. She is a powerhouse businesswoman, media legend, author, filmmaker, and visionary founder of Women of True Grit.

Lifting Others Through True Grit

Even more remarkable than her impressive accolades and accomplishments, in my eyes, is the way she leads and interacts with others with genuine kindness, a rare and much-needed quality in both professional and personal settings. She told the audience, “The way I see it is we are a True Grit sisterhood to give a hand up to others through Pearls of Hope.”

When I asked Hand how it felt to address the Women’s Leadership Alliance and its supporters, she said that her “prayer was to give Pearls of Hope to all that came, but I walked away receiving text and emails from women I had never met that said it was healing to know they were not alone in life situations.”

A Message of Courage

Through her storytelling, Hand inspired women with the message that it’s never too late to start anew. “Using the pearl metaphors, women could relate to a spec of grit inside an oyster shell to form a beautiful pearl,” said Hand. “And, as in life, with irritations, one can learn to find the courage to walk through their fears.”

If there is one word that captures the essence of her message, it is perseverance.
