Why The Heisman Trophy Needs Devonta Smith

On Tuesday, Alabama wide-receiver Devonta Smith was named as the Associated Press' Player of the Year, marking the first time a wide-receiver has ever won the award. The feeling around Alabama is that this award may not be the only award that Smith will win this season.

Smith is one of the finalists and the front runner to win the Heisman Trophy which is given to the nation's best player. Leading the nation in receptions (98), receiving yards (1,511), and yards after the catch (768)

“He’s probably done as much this year for our team as any player that we’ve ever had. He’s a great leader on the team. It’s not fair to compare him to somebody else that you didn’t even see, but I don’t think there’s many players in the country that have done more for their team than Smitty does for our team," said Alabama head coach Nick Saban.

Another interesting note about Smith winning the AP Player of the Year, is the last four winners of the award have gone on to win the Heisman: LSU quarterback Joe Burrow, Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray, Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield and Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson.

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart sent out this tweet on Tuesday giving Smith a vote of confidence when asked about who should win the award:

Not only is Devonta Smith Alabama's weapon on offense, not only is Devonta Smith responsible for one of the greatest Alabama moments on 2nd and 26 (one of which he doesn't want to talk too much about), but Devonta Smith deserves to be the Heisman Trophy winner for 2020.

In a year of uncertainty, this is the one certainty in College Football.
