One month ago, my market manager came to me and asked if my wife and I could use her degree in graphic design to create a floor plan of the radio station complete with fire exits.

I told him, "Yes, I'll go home and ask her but I'm worried that her school work may not leave her enough time to do it." He said that was cool but to let him know if she couldn't. He was going off of the fact that when building our house, my wife had put some floor plans we had found in a magazine into Photoshop and together with limited input from my 2 years of drafting classes in high school, created a layout for what is now our home. I suppose I recall bragging at some point about how talented she was at floor plans.

My friends, I think you can probably, without too much thought, piece together the end to this story.

I never relayed the message that my wife didn't have time. There, I admit it. I completely forgot to ever say anything to my boss. In all actuality, I completely forgot about it all together. No matter what you may be thinking, I am not one to usually drop the ball this badly. Right.

Fast forward to yesterday. It was a gloomy, rainy Tuscaloosa Monday; the clocks had sprung forward the night before so I already felt as if I was running an hour behind when I get a phone call asking, "Did you ever get that floor plan completed." Only then did I remember. Wow the fire Marshall was going to be at the radio station at 4pm for an inspection and that fire exit plan was a necessity.

Quickly I sat down with pencil, paper and a ruler and drafted up the floor plan for our building. I must have appeared crazy walking the halls, looking at the baseboards and quietly talking to myself. I was mentally trying to put measurements down and make sure all doors and walls were as close to scale as possible.

I posted the plans in the appropriate places and thanks to my 8th & 9th grade drafting teacher Mr. Dirk Chrestman, we passed our inspection. Those hours we spent goofing around in his classroom were not completely wasted.
