Police in the Tuscaloosa area are looking into four different shootings that took place over the Memorial Day weekend, an investigator said Tuesday morning.

Captain Kip Hart, the assistant commander of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, said the first shooting took place Friday afternoon, when a 31-year-old woman visited her boyfriend in the 2200 block of Jemison Avenue.

Hart said 31-year-old Latoya Shardae Ward was already at the house when the first woman arrived and came at her armed with a knife. The would-be victim pepper-sprayed Ward, who then went to a vehicle and grabbed a pistol. Hart said Ward fired several shots at the first woman, but did not hit her.

Ward was arrested on the scene and charged with attempted murder. She was booked in the Tuscaloosa County Jail on a $50,000 bond.

Early Saturday morning, two men were shot several times as they sat in a car outside a Tuscaloosa apartment complex, which you can read more about here.

Hart said Tuesday morning that the 22-year-old who was injured has been released from DCH Regional Medical Center but has not yet been able to provide police with more information about who shot him and why.

The 21-year-old victim is still in critical condition at UAB Hospital in Birmingham, Hart said.

Later Saturday, around 6 p.m., the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office sent deputies to DCH after a 32-year-old was admitted there with a gunshot wound to his chest.

Hart said the victim told deputies he was in the area of 5th Street Northeast in Holt when a black Honda occupied by black and white men rode by. Hart said one of the occupants called out the victim's name and another stepped out of the car and shot him. Investigators have not been able to locate a crime scene as of Tuesday morning. Hart said the victim’s injury was not life-threatening and he is expected to be released from DCH soon.

Early Tuesday morning, around 3:30 a.m., the Tuscaloosa Police Department dispatched officers to Broadmoore Gardens on East 3rd Avenue, where a 33-year-old man had been shot in the calf.

The victim told police he was outside his apartment and had a verbal argument with 30-year-old Christopher Ryans. He said he went inside his home and closed the door and immediately heard a gunshot and was struck in his leg.

Police were able to immediately locate and arrest Ryans, who was charged with second-degree assault and discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling.

He was placed in the Tuscaloosa County Jail on a combined bond of $45,000.
