Beat That Heat In West Alabama With A Few Life Hacks
SUMMER IN ALABAMA! Yes, it is always hot, but this seems over the top.

My friend and co-worker at Townsquare Media, Holli Mack, always has good tips and a few life hacks. She gave me lots of good stuff for this "beat the heat" rundown.
If there's one thing Alabamians can count on each summer, it's the heat. By late July, afternoon temperatures routinely climb into the 90s, with heat index values often soaring well above 100 degrees. While air conditioning offers welcome relief, it can also drive up utility bills.
Fortunately, staying cool doesn't have to come with a high price tag. A few simple changes can help improve comfort while keeping energy costs in check.
Start by keeping blinds or curtains closed during the hottest part of the day to reduce indoor heat. Ceiling fans can also help you feel cooler when set to rotate counterclockwise, allowing you to rely a little less on your air conditioner. Staying hydrated is equally important, especially for anyone working or spending time outdoors.
Experts also recommend saving outdoor chores, exercise, and yard work for the early morning or late evening hours when temperatures are lower. Preparing meals in a slow cooker or with an air fryer can help keep unnecessary heat out of the kitchen. You can take it a step further by preparing quick, cool meals, such as refreshing summer salads made with produce right from the garden, or fruit from the produce stand. Of course, make sure you wash and then burn your lettuce, and don't get Cyclospora. Well, maybe you don't have to burn it.
Don't overlook basic home maintenance, either. Replacing HVAC filters, sealing air leaks, and adjusting the thermostat by a degree or two can improve efficiency and reduce energy use. Regular seasonal maintenance can also help you avoid those emergency repair calls when your AC unit stops cooling because it's working double overtime.
Finally, remember that extreme heat can be dangerous. Check on older neighbors, make sure pets have plenty of water and shade, and know the warning signs of heat-related illness.
With a little planning, it's possible to stay safe, stay comfortable, and enjoy everything an Alabama summer has to offer—without putting too much strain on your budget.
