The Nashes were honored at an exclusive event held at The University of Alabama’s President’s Mansion on April 15, 2025.

“The Nash family embodies everything the Alexis de Tocqueville Society stands for,” said Jackie Wuska, President & CEO of United Way of West Alabama. “Their commitment to education, youth development, and community service has not only improved lives but inspired generations of leaders. We are honored to recognize them and celebrate their remarkable journey.”

Dr. Charles and Hattie Nash, both raised in Summit, Mississippi, built a life rooted in faith, education, and service. Married in 1968, they advanced education and public service across the South, from school desegregation in Mississippi to shaping higher education in Georgia and Alabama.

Charles broke barriers in higher education, serving 28 years with The University of Alabama System and reaching its highest administrative level as the first person of color. Hattie, a dedicated educator, inspired students at all levels, mentored young women, and championed literacy programs.

Their impact reaches far beyond the classroom. Both have actively contributed to civic life through the Rotary Club, the Boy Scouts, church ministries, and the United Way.

The legacy of service established by Dr. Charles and Hattie Nash lives on through their children, Kimberly and Charles Jr., as well as their grandchildren, Sidney Elizabeth, Joseph “Joey” Bradford, Jonathan, and Taj.
