In 1882, Sloss Furnace opened in Birmingham, Alabama making it one of the country's biggest iron producers.

Although the building brought in much needed business, it also brought about quite a bit of despair. The enormous furnaces contained tons of melted steel and soon became a very risky workplace. There were multiple incidences of men falling into the molten steel and incinerating to death. Some employees even perished from volatile steam pipe bursts or carbon monoxide poisoning.

There have been numerous reports of hauntings due to the Furnace's death trap. One report claims that Theophilus Calvin Jowers, a worker who fell into Alice Furnace in 1887, can be seen walking above the main floor.

Sloss Furnace is now a National Historic Landmark and, according to it's website, "offers us a glimpse into the great industrial past of the South and our nation."
