Although the citizens of St. Augustine, Florida tend to boast that they reside in the oldest U.S. city, they are wrong. Dating all the way back to 1540, Childersburg, Alabama is considered the oldest continually occupied city in the nation.

Once known as Coosa, this town was originally occupied by the Coosa Indian Nation when it was discovered by Hernando DeSoto on an expedition. On his quest from the Tennessee River to the Coosa River, DeSoto was welcomed by the Indians in this area with open arms. The men enjoyed the Indian's hospitality so much that they ended up staying for a month.

Since DeSoto's visit to Childersburg, there have been a number of explorers and pioneers who have made their mark in this town. Hundreds of years of history prove that Childersburg is, indeed, the oldest U.S. city.
