I was always the one kid in school, who at lunchtime on pizza day, was the envy of all the kids!

My Grandmother was assistant manager of the New Hope School Cafeteria in Columbus, MS throughout my time there and even went on to manage the new elementary cafeteria after it was built, until her retirement.

But that's not the reason I've asked you to join me in this post. I want to talk about the 1980s and the lunch room pizzas! Were they not the best pizzas you have ever had? Take all your current brands of freezer pizza and throw them out the window! I'd take the 1980's school pizzas over them any day! I bet even still to this day you can remember how good they were, just like I can.

Those days are a vivid memory for me. When you walked through the doors of the lunch line, my Grandmother was the first person you saw. Mrs. Jones was the lady who took your milk money. Back then the only "choices" we got was a choice between chocolate or white milk. On pizza day, you could buy an extra pizza for a dollar or so but most people didn't seem to do that. Grandmother would look over at her co-workers on the line and say, "Give him an extra pizza!" Yes! I scored an extra pizza every pizza day! I'd join my friends at our table and get evil stares as I enjoyed, not one, but two of those extra cheesy rectangle slices!

Also, back in those days, she was able to buy those pizzas by the case, personally and bring them home for us! So at least once a week we had pizza night at the house.

While we're rolling down Memory Lane in Foodville, I also recall that she would bring home jars of the school peanut butter! I know you remember soup days and those peanut butter sandwiches. The flavor always reminded me of PB & Jelly mixed together or some strange mix of PB and honey. Not exactly sure but growing up with a Grandmother in the cafeteria was awesome! Long live the glorious rectangle pizza!
