Nick Saban Urges People To Donate Plasma
Alabama Crimson Tide head coach, Nick Saban is preparing his team to head to Arkansas for this weekend's matchup with the Razorbacks but that doesn't stop him from urging the public to be mindful of the COVID-19 pandemic. Saban tested positive in late November and was forced to miss the Auburn game but bounced back quickly and credited his recovery largely to receiving a blood plasma treatment.
"I think it’s important that people really understand how helpful this can be and I know if you’ve had this disease and you have immunity to it and you can give your blood plasma, it might help some other people who are being affected by this and I know we don’t have enough of it to go around," said Saban. "As soon as I'm eligible to be able to do that, I’m going to do it. I’m going to give my blood plasma so it really can help somebody else. So maybe they don’t have some of the issues and problems that create some really serious sickness and sometimes fatalities. You always can call the Red Cross and they can take care of you and you might be able to help some other people and I would encourage folks to do that."
People that recover from COVID-19 often have antibodies in their blood that help to fight the virus. Those with COVID-19 can often see an improvement in health after receiving a blood plasma transfusion.
Saban said the process lasted nearly 45 minutes with about an hour's observation period after. He said the process was so smooth that he was able to work on game preparation while receiving the plasma.
"I could tell you it worked wonders and it was very, very effective. I would recommend it, but I also think that I would recommend that we have a tremendous need for that from people who have had it who have antibodies that they could help other people," said Saban.
The legendary coach said he would be donating his blood plasma as soon as he is eligible in order to help the public. Imagine receiving a blood plasma treatment from the greatest college football coach of all time.
