Alabama Women Had a Big Weekend

Alabama's gymnastics team has managed to stay unbeaten [with one tie] and the women's basketball team snapped a losing streak Sunday.

All in all, it was a good weekend for the ladies of Crimson Tide athletics.

Friday, No. 6 Alabama gymnastics marched into Gainesville and left with a 197.575-197.425 road win. That victory included a perfect 10 by Lilly Hudson on the vault.

Head coach Ashley Johnston, said, "I'm so proud of the team tonight. This was a really important meet for us because it's easy to get to a meet like this and try to be perfect, and I'm really proud of the way that the team focused on just making progress. Progress over perfection.

"We've worked really hard on our culture and trusting each other and not letting one little mistake affect the approach of the next person up. I felt like the team really settled into that tonight. Even if there wasn't a perfect performance (by an athlete), they didn't let it get the best of them. They continue to just trust their average, where they weren't trying harder. They weren't trying to do anything different. They just trusted their preparation and executed at a really high level.”

Next up for the gymnastics Tide is a return home to Coleman Coliseum for its Be the Change meet, when it hosts the Kentucky Wildcats Friday, Feb. 2, at 7:30 p.m. CT. The meet will be broadcast live on SEC Network.

Things haven't gone as well of late for the women's basketball team, that is until Sunday, when Kristy Curry's Crimson Tide whacked Kentucky 91-74 at Coleman Coliseum. Sarah Ashlee Barker and Essence Cody collected double-doubles to lead the Crimson Tide (16-6, 3-4 SEC) to the win.

Barker led Alabama with a career-high 34 points, while hauling in 10 rebounds to pick up the third double-double, while Cody added 14 points and 10 rebounds. It is the first time since the 2021-22 season that two UA players collected double-doubles in the same game.

Said Curry: "I really loved how our team played today on a special day with We Back Pat [Summit]. Certainly the way we rebounded the ball was the difference in the ballgame.

" It was alumni day, so it was special to have a lot of alums in the building and welcome them back. We're excited for the opportunity that this week presents and we’ll enjoy this until midnight and reset. I loved who our team tried to be all week in our preparation and the way we came out and executed the game plan.”

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Tide. Alabama will travel to Bud Walton Arena on Feb. 1 to take on the Arkansas Razorbacks. The Crimson Tide will face the Razorbacks on the SEC Network at 8 p.m. CT and you can hear the game on Catfish 100.1 FM.
