Alabama senior Herb Jones was named one of ten semifinalists for the Naismith Trophy, Alabama Basketball announced earlier Thursday.

The Naismith Player of the Year Trophy is awarded to the most outstanding player in college basketball by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. Players like Jalen Brunso, Zion Williamson, and Obi Toppin have won it in recent years.

If Jones were to win it, he’d be the first player from Alabama to earn the award. He joins USC’s Evan Mobley as one of two players in the country to be in contention for not only the Naismith POTY Trophy, but the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Trophy as well.

Jones is now the lone representative of the SEC in contention for the trophy, with LSU freshman Cameron Thomas no longer appearing on the list of names.

The Alabama native’s national recognition is due largely in part to the record statistical year he is having with the Alabama Crimson Tide (20-6, 15-2).

In addition to averaging a career-high 11 points and averaging 45% on shots from the floor, Jones’ defense ranks in the top 10 in the SEC for all three major defensive categories. He currently ranks 10th in blocks with 26, sixth in rebounds with 159, and first in steals with 45.

The finalists for the Naismith Trophy are announced on March 16, with the winner being announced near the end of the postseason on April 4. Jones and the Crimson Tide end their regular season in Athens, Georgia to take on the Georgia Bulldogs Saturday at 1:00 p.m. CT.
