Our dear friend Pastor Scott McCown from Central Church of Christ in Tuscaloosa stopped by for another "thought but not a sermon".

Going home is on many minds this graduation season, and we turn it over to Brother McCown for a few thoughts on "home."

Thomas Wolfe’s posthumous novel carries the title, “You Can’t Go Home Again.”

John Denver sang, “Hey, it’s good to be back home again.”

Mister Wolfe and Denver, which is it? Can I go home or not?

Finals are over, and many of our Shelton, Stillman, and University of Alabama students are heading home for the summer. Some are going home for the first time in months. After a taste of adulting, will home even feel like home?  Maybe that is what Thomas Wolfe is saying.

HOME.

There is something wonderfully sweet about thoughts of home: the people, the food, the history or stories, the scenery, or maybe we simply feel a sense of belonging at home. Home is a part of our identity.

GOING HOME.

What images or thoughts come to your mind when someone mentions home? Family, comfort, fun, holidays, or the smell of freshly-baked chocolate chip cookies? Do you choke up when Daughtry sings I'm Going Home to the place that I belong?

There is something about going home. There is something sweet in the memories, smells, and sounds.

The people of Rueben, Gad, and 1/2 Manasseh felt that sweetness, "So the people . . . returned home." (Joshua 22:9).

The prophet Samuel “would return to Ramah, for his home was there." (1Sa 7:17).

There is something about Going Home.

The Apostle Paul reminds us that life on earth is preparation for our eternal home. "For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2Co 5:1

Going Home to where the Father is.

Going Home to where the Savior is.

Going home to where God's children throughout the ages will be.

As MercyMe sings, "Almost home, brother, it won't be long, soon all your burdens will be gone . . ."

HOME!
