Alabama Shines in GMA’s “50 States in 50 Weeks” Feature
Good Morning America (GMA) has been busy and on the road with its feature, '50 States in 50 Weeks.’
Faith Abubey, ABC News correspondent, traveled to the Yellowhammer State to highlight the “long history of seafood in Alabama.” Her journey took her to the coastal community of Bayou La Batre and the Catalina Restaurant.

In her introduction, she acknowledged that the Catalina Restaurant has been proudly family-owned and operated for five generations, over the span of 60 years. Renowned for many dishes, their standout is for shrimp and oysters. It remains a beloved local staple and must-visit destination at 14060 S Wintzell Ave, Bayou La Batre, Alabama.
In the '50 States in 50 Weeks” special, Abubey also spotlighted Mobile Bay, emphasizing how fresh seafood is woven into the daily life and culture of the community. As part of her look at Alabama’s seafood legacy, she featured Heritage Seafood, known for offering freshly caught shrimp straight from the boat dock to the public.
During the live broadcast of Good Morning America on Thursday, December 4, the show spotlighted Alabama with a 90-second feature highlighting some of the state’s most iconic contributions to history and culture.
The segment touched on Alabama’s role in making Christmas an official holiday, Mobile’s distinction as the birthplace of Mardi Gras, and the groundbreaking work at Huntsville’s Marshall Space Center.
It also honored the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen and celebrated notable Alabamians, including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Helen Keller, Nat King Cole, and Jesse Owens.
And of course, no profile about Alabama would be complete without acknowledging the deep passion for college football and showcasing the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Auburn Tigers.
