Saturday Shooting in Ensley Leaves Two Residents Dead
Reporting from AL.com shows shots were fired on 48th Street in the 1700 block of Birmingham's Ensley community around 11 p.m. The two male victims received gunshot wounds and were taken to UAB hospital where they were later pronounced dead.
Per the report, Officer Truman Fitzgerald said "Shot Spotter," the city’s gun detection system, alerted authorities of several shots being discharged. While making their way to the location of the incident, authorities were made aware that two victims had been shot.
Upon arrival, police believed both victims to be in their 60s.
Fitzgerald told AL.com, “Both males were just outside enjoying the night when an unknown suspect opened fire on them...’’ Police suspect multiple shots were discharged, and the victims were the intended targets.
“Everybody’s emotional, just trying to figure out what’s going on... Everybody’s trying to figure out why somebody would want to hurt these two men,” FItzgerald told AL.com.
A press release from the Birmingham Police Department says the deaths mark the 69th and 70th murder investigation for the city in 2023. Six justifiable death investigations have also taken place.
