Arrival Times of Hummingbirds in Alabama for Spring Migration
It’s almost time to say goodbye to Winter and welcome the Spring season. In Alabama, that means a shift in weather, flowers bloom, outdoor festivals, and birds chirping.
Or the sweet sounds of the hummingbird's wings.
One thing I love about Spring is the migration of hummingbirds to their summer homes. Another reason is my dad. He was an “unofficial” hummingbird expert. He pretty much had a hummingbird feeder at every window in his home.
Taking Care of Hummingbirds Might Be a Full-Time Job
No store-bought juice (as he would call it) for HIS hummingbirds. Bud would lovingly make his liquid gold every Sunday, clean every bird feeder, and restock.
Let me not forget to mention his hummingbird gardens filled with honeysuckle, rose of Sharon, bee balm, and lantana, which my mother would say cost a small fortune.
A great memory I have of my father is watching him watch HIS hummingbirds out the kitchen window while sipping his coffee.
He was obsessed with hummingbirds.
I can see why they are gorgeous. To me, hummingbirds are like the animal form of meditation; they are so peaceful to watch.
But my father’s obsession was a smart move. The Hummingbird Guide said that the birds “expend a tremendous amount of energy during their migration journey.”
Did you know that changes in the weather can impact the migration patterns of hummingbirds by influencing the timing of flower blossoms and the availability of nectar? So, it is crucial to be prepared with feeders in such circumstances.
If you are wondering when hummingbirds will make their arrival in Alabama. It happens soon, so get ready and help those cuties while on their journey.
It looks like our area could be from March 10 through March 20.
According to Bud, the “unofficial” hummingbird expert, the most common hummingbirds seen in Alabama are the Ruby-throated hummingbirds.
Enjoy your bird-watching this season. Think of Bud when you see a cute little hummingbird.
Here is a great video on how to make the nectar.
