News from the Capstone today as UA kicks off the annual drive for students and staff to get a free flu shot.

The University of Alabama will offer free flu shots to all students, faculty, and staff at various campus locations through November. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends flu shots for everyone 6 months and older. The team at UA wants students and employees to know they don't need health insurance to receive a free flu shot.

The UA Student Health Center and Pharmacy also offers flu vaccinations to students, and employees receive free flu shots at the Faculty/Staff Clinic at University Medical Center. The shots are also being offered to the immediate families of all staff and faculty. This year's flu vaccine has been updated against the influenza viruses targeted for the 2026/2027 flu season.

The program has been offered at UA each year for over a decade. Most medical experts and medical information sites say that it is a myth that the flu shot causes influenza in recipients; however, some experience side effects that can feel similar to flu symptoms.

For more information, including all dates and locations, visit the flu shot information website from the College of Community Health Services.
