West Alabama Wednesday Briefing
Good morning West Alabama! It is Wednesday August 28, 2024.
This is the 241st day of the year which, since 2022, is annually recognized as National Sports Sampling Day. It is a day kids and families alike are encouraged to try a new sport or play one they haven’t in a long time. Kind of a sports buffet.
Experts say too many children are focusing on only one sport and unfortunately many eventually get burned out on those sports and in many cases all sports. The National Sports Council points out that many parents push their children into specializing in one sport with the hopes the child will develop into a star athlete with the possibility of big bucks ahead in the pros.
The council states that most child athletes just want to have fun, not develop a career and 10 years old. A national study found more than 50% of children quite sports because they get burned out on it. Also, many physicians are now identifying the repetitiveness of plays one sport as an underlying cause for many athletic injuries.
According to the day's website, National Sport Sampling Day gives power to children who love to play sports by sampling more than one sport. Sampling more than one sport provides opportunity for children to grow physically and emotionally. Sampling new sports calls for action to enter into a world of new experiences and memories.
National Sports Sampling Day proponents point to five benefits from sports:
- Teaches problem solving skills,
- Helps maintain healthy habits for both mind and body,
- Builds self-esteem and boosts self-image,
- Encourages new friendships,
- Promotes learning to work with other people.
Sampling sports is not just for kids, adults can benefit too.

It is not too early to check the weather for the coming long Labor Day holiday weekend.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms move into West Alabama this afternoon and tonight and are possible again tomorrow and each afternoon through Monday. It has been a dry month so far so areas that do receive rain should be happy.
