Happy New Year West Alabama.! It is Wednesday, January 1, 2025.

Wednesday Morning Observations:

It is the first day of a new year, filled with optimism, hope and resolutions to do better. In numerology, 2025 is all about the number 9. You get this by adding up the digits of the year (2 + 0 + 2 + 5), and this number brings some important themes like endings, personal growth, and community values. It’s a year that encourages us to reflect, find closure, and work towards making a positive impact in our lives and the lives of those around us. To me that sounds like any new year.

For a guy born in the 1940s it's like something out of a science fiction novel to write 2025 as the new year. The 2000s were regularly used when I was growing up for Buck Rogers (young people look him up) type science fiction and space travel. Back then, science fiction often depicted 2025 as a time of great advancement in society and we have in many ways.

However, the problems of the world are much the same as the 40s: wars and rumors of war, political strife, poverty, hate, discrimination and the super wealthy controlling our society. So, despite the scientific, technological and medical advancements of our time are we any different from back then?

Every year we individually and collectively vow to do better and every year it only takes a few weeks for all those high-minded resolutions to fall to the wayside. Most of those resolutions concern making ourselves better, and that is fine, but let's also vow to make our neighborhood, city, state and nation better and let's stick to those vows.

Let's try to do better this year by being more civil to each other, work as a community to end the almost daily violence, do a better job of helping those in need, find a way to provide better healthcare for all, push politicians to do the right thing (not just the political thing), not let social media continue to divide us and most of all, "do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

Our future depends on us returning to being the UNITED States of America.

May 2025 be truly a happy new year!

Weather:

It will be a bit cooler today with highs settling into the upper 40s to mid 50s under mostly sunny skies. Those skies will remain clear tonight, but you might want to put a fire in the fireplace. Overnight lows will be in the 20s and 30s across West Alabama.

Glancing ahead, an "Alberta Clipper" will pass north of Alabama Friday bringing with it daytime highs in the lower 40s and low temperatures in the lower 20s. And yes, there has been mention of the "S" word in long range forecasts for late next week. However, models continue in disagreement about prospects for a winter storm.

Offensive Offense Leads to Bama Bowl Loss
The Crimson Tide's offense was atrocious again and that led to a 19-13 loss to Michigan in the New Year's Eve ReliaQuest Bowl in Tampa. Four turnovers in Bama's first four possessions led to all the points the Wolverines needed to secure the win.
Neither team put on an offensive show for the crowd, but Alabama could not take advantage of opportunities. The Tide threw four incomplete passes in the endzone in the waning minutes of the game that could have jerked victory from the jaws of defeat.
Bama finished the season at 9-4 after being ranked #1 following the amazing win over then #1 Georgia early in the season. From then on, most every game became a struggle. All four losses, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Oklahoma and Michigan, were away from home but were winnable games.
UA was a favorite, in some cases a large favorite, in each game they lost. Bama recorded the most losses in a season since Nick Saban's first year at the Capstone. The loss also broke a 6-6 tie in the series of games played between Alabama and Michigan.
