Good Christmas Eve, Eve! It is Monday, December 23. 2024.

Monday Morning Observations:

It is yet another big holiday travel week. The number of travelers has increased virtually every holiday since the pandemic began to fade. Record numbers have traveled on the highways, airways and railways. Cruise lines are even reporting significant hikes in the number of Americans reserving cabins, especially in the Caribbean and Alaska.

AAA predicts that 119.3 million American will travel 50 miles or more from home during the holiday season from this past Saturday thru January 1, 2025. This would surpass the previous record set in 2019 by 64,000 travelers

7.85 million passengers will be flying but 90% of travelers are hitting the roadways. That number of motorists will put pressure on ALEA and other State Troopers across the nation to keep everyone safe. That is what prompted ALEA's "12 Days of Safety" Campaign.

“We know people go out and you shop, but really the greatest gift that you can give to your family is you, but to be able to do that you’ve got to show up,” said Sgt. Jeremy Burkett.

15 people died on Alabama roadways during the Thanksgiving holiday. Sgt. Burkett says with the help of motorists not speeding, drinking and driving, being distracted by texting and most important of all, buckling up, that number can be reduced over Christmas and New Year's night.
Troopers are not on the road in extra numbers, being away from their families over the holidays, just to make the state money or give you a hard time. To a man and woman at ALEA, they are on duty for your safety.
P.S.: A check with Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International shows all in and outbound flights are on time this morning. However, they caution winter weather could lead to delays later today in and out of the northeast
