Updated Risk Areas: Strong to Severe Storms Across Alabama
Risk Areas
Weather conditions can change over time and as systems are approaching. The Storm Prediction Center has adjusted the risk areas for today. Now there is a “smaller "slight risk" (level 2/5) over Alabama this afternoon, mainly for areas south and east of Montgomery,” said Spann.
As showers move across the Yellowhammer State, a “few storms that form after 2 p.m. could produce strong wind gusts. A brief, isolated tornado is possible, but not likely,” said James Spann, ABC 33/40, and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist
Timing
The Townsquare Media Coverage area is under either the marginal risk zone or just in the area for thunderstorms. The current time for our area is between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.
Threats
In the slight risk area, the threat is for brief tornadoes and damaging winds up to 60 mph, while in the marginal risk area, the threats mentioned are less likely but cannot be completely ruled out.
Flooding Concerns
However, there is still a concern for river flooding. The National Weather Service in Birmingham said the “remains a threat as roughly another 1-1.5" of rainfall is expected today across the area. A Flood Watch remains in effect through this afternoon, and Flood Warnings are in place for parts of the Black Warrior, Sucarnoochee, and Tombigbee rivers.”
Spann said, “Thankfully, this large mass of rain this morning will mitigate a major threat of redevelopment this afternoon.”
