The University of Alabama System's board of trustees Thursday approved a plan for their three campuses in Tuscaloosa, Birmingham and Huntsville to return to in-person classes this fall.

In a virtual meeting held on Zoom, Chancellor Fess St. John said the goal on the UA System is for its campuses to be the safest universities in America in the wake of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

St. John said the system has been able to draw on experts from all three campuses and the UAB Health System to devise a plan to keep students healthy and limit the spread of the virus and barring any major changes, the universities will endeavor to do that this fall.

"We all know that these plans may change, but it is safe to say that we are now fully prepared to serve our students, faculty and staff," St. John said.

The board also declined to raise in-state tuition at any of the three schools -- this is the fourth consecutive year that number has stayed flat in Tuscaloosa, and the second in a row for Birmingham and Huntsville.
