Over two year's worth of hard work is about to hopefully pay off for Tuscaloosa's only roller derby team, Druid City Dames, as they host their first home bout on Saturday!

By day, the women who make up this rough and rugged sport in our champion city hold job titles ranging from graduate assistant to jeweler and from photographer to computer programmer. Many holding jobs at the University of Alabama in the Biology department, Community Health Services, Continuing Studies and more.

When they leave work, strap on their pads and lace up their skates, theses ladies transform into no nonsense, dedicated athletes with a goal of doing what it takes to win the bout and to help move the sport of roller derby into the future.

Popular roller derby as we know it today began in the 1940s in 50 cities across the United States. After a dip in popularity, roller derby made its comeback in Austin, TX in the early 2000s and currently there are over 2000 roller derby leagues across the world with one of those being here in Tuscaloosa. As of 2016, the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), which DCD are a part of, had 397 full member leagues and 48 Apprentice Leagues.

In 2012, the International Olympic Committee decided roller derby was one of the eight sports under consideration for inclusion in the 2020 Olympic Games.

As this is their first ever bout, Tuscaloosa residents need to come out in force to support their hometown team as they host the Southern Harm Derby Dames this Saturday, June 24th at Super Skate on McFarland Blvd!
