Tuscaloosa City Schools Start Date: What Families Need to Know
Tuscaloosa City Schools (TCS) will kick off the new academic year on Thursday, August 7. The school system is preparing to welcome students back for a dynamic and purposeful year of learning.

A major change this year stems from a new statewide law banning the use of personal wireless communication devices, such as cell phones, smartwatches, and similar devices during the school day. To comply with this law, TCS will introduce locked phone pouches for all middle and high school students to keep their devices secured during school hours.
“We are ready to welcome students back and keep building on the academic progress we’ve made,” said TCS Superintendent Dr. Mike Daria. “Limiting distractions and protecting learning time is one more way we’re staying focused on helping every student succeed.”
Why Regular Attendance Matters
The importance of regular school attendance, particularly during the initial weeks of the academic year, is vital. Studies reveal that students who are frequently absent, missing 10% or more of the school year, face a much higher risk of falling behind academically.
“Chronic absenteeism can begin as early as kindergarten and is a key predictor of lower test scores, reduced reading and math proficiency, and lower graduation rates,” said the TCS press release.
Parents and families are encouraged to visit their child’s school website to review supply lists and back-to-school information.
