Black History Maker of Alabama – Dr. Tamalyn L. Peterson
Black history is not just a reflection of the past. It celebrates those who shape the present and pave the way for the future. Among those trailblazers is Dr. Tamalyn L. Peterson, an esteemed educator, mentor, and leader at Stillman College, whose profound and inspiring impact on higher education is undeniable.
Peterson's journey is a testament to the power of education and perseverance. A proud alumna of Stillman College, Class of 1998, she didn't just walk through the halls of her alma mater, she left a legacy. As a student, she was a leader in every sense of the word, balancing full academic and choir scholarships while holding key positions across campus. From serving as Editor of The Tiger's Paw newspaper to being Business Manager of the Student Government Association, her commitment to excellence was evident from the start.
Her passion for education led her to a distinguished career in academics. She served in multiple leadership roles at Clark Atlanta University, rising to the position of Interim Dean of the graduate division. But Stillman called her home. As an Associate Professor of English, she now dedicates her life to teaching and mentoring students in English Composition, African American Literature, and more. She is not just a professor. She is a guide, shaping the next generation of leaders through her unwavering commitment to scholarship and student success.
Beyond the classroom, Peterson is a force within the Stillman community. She plays a vital role in faculty development, serves as a faculty representative on the Board of Trustees, and mentors students through the Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society, the very organization she joined as a student in 1996.
Her leadership extends to the Stillman College Research Symposium, ensuring that academic excellence remains at the forefront of the institution.
Peterson embodies what it means to lead with purpose. Her philosophy, "Excellence without Excuses," is more than a motto; it's a challenge to her students to strive for greatness, regardless of obstacles. She believes in "The Stillman Way" of not just being the best but doing the best and having the best.
“Black History to me, it’s ubiquitous and life-changing.” - Dr. Peterson
As we celebrate Black History Month, Townsquare Media honors Dr. Tamalyn L. Peterson for her dedication to education, her unwavering commitment to excellence, and her role in shaping the future of Black scholars and leaders.
