Employees and faculty at Shelton State, Bevill State and Marion Military Academy in West Alabama and other Community Colleges, technical schools and the Alabama Technology Network across the state are seeing a slightly fatter paycheck. The Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees. voted for a 2% cost of living pay raise at their Wednesday meeting in Montgomery.

Although the fiscal year does not begin for a little more than two weeks the pay hike was effective as of September 1st. However, faculty raises are effective as of the beginning of the 2024/2025 academic year.

Beville State has campuses in Carrollton, Fayette, Jasper, Hamilton and Sumiton. Shelton State has two campuses in Tuscaloosa. There are 24 community and technical colleges in the state which offer 2-to-4-year transfer, dual enrollment, technical training, adult education, and community education.

The raise comes as a result of the Alabama Legislature approving a 2% cost-of-living increase in salaries for K-12 and two-year schools in the Education Trust Fund during this past spring's legislative session.

Between 2020 and 2022, community colleges nationwide lost around 13% of staff due to the COVID19 pandemic and have had a difficult time attracting faculty and staff across the country according to higher education consultant EAB in a 2022 study.

State community college officials are hoping the salary hike will help recruit more full and part-time instructors and school staff.

According to figures from the community college system, approximately 300,000 people are served annually by all of the campuses in the state system, including community colleges, technical colleges, workforce development, and adult education.
