‘Live at the Plaza’ Summer Concert Series to Start in June

Now that they've gotten the Tuscaloosa City Council's approval, plans are to move ahead with live music in Government Plaza each Friday night in June!

The appropriately named "Live at the Plaza" concert series will feature live music from local artists from 6-8pm. The concerts will be free to the public and city councilman Matt Calderone stated that private donations will cover the cost of the musicians.

According to the City Attorney's office, patrons will be allowed to bring coolers and have alcoholic beverages during the event.

An article by Jason Morton in the Tuscaloosa News stated:

This will mark the City Council's first foray into an entertainment district, which relaxes the laws concerning open containers of alcohol within certain designated areas of the city.

It last revisited the topic in 2012, when city officials formed an ad hoc committee to examine the feasibility of turning certain popular night spots in Tuscaloosa into state-approved “entertainment districts.”

While Live at the Plaza will confine the alcohol use to the park itself, the formal entertainment districts — if created — would allow drinkers to bring open alcoholic beverages into the streets.
