For many people, pets are more than just animals. They're family. And when money gets tight, making sure those furry family members have everything they need can become another financial challenge.

Thankfully, a West Alabama organization is helping eligible residents care for their four-legged companions.

Community Service Programs of West Alabama (CSP), through Meals on Wheels, offers a Companion Pet Support Program designed to assist eligible clients with expenses related to their pets.

The program provides assistance with pet food, veterinary care and grooming costs, helping owners keep their animals healthy without carrying the entire financial burden alone.

And for residents who depend on their pets for companionship, that support can make a meaningful difference.

According to CSP, applicants must have a household income at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty line to qualify.

The program lists the following gross monthly income limits:

- One-person household: $1,995
- Two-person household: $2,705
- Three-person household: $3,415
- Four-person household: $4,125

For households with more than four members, an additional $710 is added to the monthly income limit for each person.

The Companion Pet Support Program is available throughout the counties served by CSP of West Alabama, although specific services may vary depending on the county.

Residents interested in applying must complete an intake form and provide copies of their photo identification and proof of income.

Applicants should contact their local CSP office to learn more about available assistance and begin the application process.

For many households, a little help with pet expenses could mean keeping a beloved companion happy, healthy and right where they belong: at home.
