According to a study by Betway, Alabama ranks No. 6 in the nation when it comes to horror movie interest. The report found that 41.03 percent of movie related searches in Alabama are focused on the horror genre, putting the state in the top ten nationwide.

That means Alabama residents are spending a significant portion of their movie watching time searching for scary movies compared to other genres like comedy, romance, thrillers, or documentaries.

According to the Betway study, Delaware ranks first in the country, with residents spending about 47 percent of their movie watching time on horror films. Georgia landed in second place with 46.23 percent, followed by Maine, West Virginia, and Oregon.

But Alabama still holds its own, landing ahead of several large states including Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Nevada, and Texas.

Researchers say the numbers highlight just how strong the fan base for horror movies has become across the country.

“Horror has always had a passionate fan base, but the data shows just how dominant the genre is in some states,” a Betway spokesperson said, according to the study. “In places like Delaware and Georgia, nearly half of all movie viewing is dedicated to horror.”

According to the Betway research, the rankings were based on the share of online movie searches by genre in each state, comparing interest in horror against other popular categories.

For Alabama movie fans, the results suggest one thing is clear: when it’s time to pick a film, plenty of people in the state don’t mind turning off the lights and watching something a little scary.
