Free Opioid Awareness Webinar Set for August 31

A free community webinar will bring together Alabama health experts and residents to discuss opioid awareness and overdose prevention in recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day.

READY is partnering with the Center for Opioid Research, Education & Outreach, or COACH, to host “Engage: An Opioid Summit” on Monday, Aug. 31, from noon to 1 p.m. Central Time via Zoom.

Dr. Karen Marlowe will serve as the keynote speaker. Marlowe is associate dean for academic programs and a professor in Auburn University’s Department of Pharmacy Practice. She is also a practicing pharmacist in Mobile and the founding director of Auburn University COACH.

The summit will focus on understanding opioids, evidence-based overdose prevention strategies and ways communities can become more involved in prevention efforts. Organizers also plan to discuss creating spaces for community healing and encouraging conversations that can help reduce the stigma surrounding opioid use and overdose.

An interactive question-and-answer session will give participants an opportunity to learn more about preventing opioid overdoses and ask questions about steps individuals and communities can take to support prevention efforts.

Organizers say the webinar is designed for anyone interested in expanding their knowledge about opioids, helping a loved one or learning how communities can respond to the overdose crisis. The event also aims to give participants practical information they can take back to their families and communities.
