John Steinbeck would have been 112 years old today. The Pulitzer Prize-winning American writer was born on February 27, 1902.  In 1968, he died in New York at age 66 of heart failure. He was a life long smoker. Steinbeck wrote over 27 books that spanned several decades.

I haven't read them all. As a high school student, I was required to read "Of Mice and Men". Within a few pages, I couldn't put it down. It quickly became less of an assignment and more of a recreation. After I took the quiz on it, I checked out The Grapes of Wrath from our town library, then The Pearl. Even if you don't read a lot, you should check out the three I mentioned.

Believe it or not, I was actually inspired to write a few short stories after reading my first Steinbeck books. I managed to win a couple first place awards in school writing competitions while in high school. Maybe one day I will share one of my stories for your critique.

Google pays tribute with a Google Doodle today. Kinda cool.
