Is Tuscaloosa Home to a Haunted Hostel?

The Druid City was once the state capitol, and the ruins of the former Capitol Building can be found at the intersection of 6th Street and 28th Avenue.

Traveling politicians and tourists alike needed a place to stay during their trips to Tuscaloosa, and many found their lodging at a spot now known as the Old Tavern.

The Old Tavern was built in 1827 by innkeeper William Dunton. It was a stagecoach stop that offered travelers a meal and a place to stay. Legislators, soldiers, and many more people stayed at the Old Tavern throughout the years, and it even served as the temporary residence of Governor John Gayle from 1831-1835.

The Old Tavern served as a private residence for many families between the years of 1882 to 1964. In 1968, the building was acquired by the Tuscaloosa Preservation Society and moved three blocks over to its current location on 28th Avenue.

The Old Tavern now serves as the headquarters of the Tuscaloosa Preservation Society and a museum that offers visitors a chance to look into the Druid City's storied past.

Could the museum be home to more than artifacts?

There have been many reports of paranormal activity at the Old Tavern. Visitors have reported hearing unexplained noises, and some have even heard whispers and chatter only to find themselves in an empty room.

I can't say for certain if the Old Tavern is haunted, but I can tell you that I wouldn't like to stay there alone on a chilly October night.
