Help West Alabamians in Need Stay Cool This Summer: Here’s How

To help residents who lack the means to stay cool this summer, Temporary Emergency Services has a goal to collect 150 electric fans. They are also collecting water and hydrated sports-type drinks.

In 2023, Earth's average land and ocean surface temperature was 2.12 degrees Fahrenheit (1.18 degrees Celsius) above the 20th-century average, marking the highest global temperature recorded in NOAA's climate data from 1850 to 2023.

“The forecasted temperatures and heat index values are a concern since some of our TES clients do not have the established central air condition systems,” said Dr. Karen Thompson-Jackson, Executive Director for Temporary Emergency Services. “Most residents have a window AC unit, and the electric fans help circulate the cool air.”

According to Carbon Brief, “this year is shaping up to either match or surpass 2023 as the hottest year on record.”

Jackson said, “The needs of our residents are great. There are close to 300 people that need assistance with cooling this summer.”
